Leadership

Leadership is a mix of a lot of things, but first and foremost, it’s about having faith in your beliefs. It is being a good communicator, listening to others, setting examples, trying to put your best foot forward, and not giving up. Leadership is all about being passionate about what you do and having confidence in yourself and your ability to motivate and inspire your followers.

What is Leadership?

Leadership is the art of empowering a group of people to act toward achieving a common goal.

In a business setting, this can mean directing workers and colleagues with a strategy to meet the company’s needs.

Leadership involves having a vision, communicating that vision clearly, and knowing the steps to reach your goal.

What is Peace?

Peace is a concept of societal friendship and harmony, in which there is no hostility and violence.

In social terms, we use it commonly to refer to a lack of conflict, such as war.

Peace is freedom from fear of violence between individuals or groups.

My name is Otome. I am 21 years old. I am a healthcare worker. I believe that my role is to act as an agent of change. People call me a “gentle giant”. I believe in peace, justice, and stability. I think discussion is always better than violence. Recently, something very sad happened at work. There was an accident between two bota botas. The little boy of one of the drivers was rushed to hospital, where we tried everything, but he died. The father was beside himself with grief. He blamed everyone for the accident that took his son’s life. He blamed his wife, the healthcare workers, even God. He threatened his wife and the staff. I was afraid for my safety and for the others. But I listened to him and asked him questions to calm him. I asked him how he wanted to honour his son’s memory, instead of focusing on vengeance. He broke down and wept. He and his family needed to heal. I have learned that anger often comes from pain and sadness. I’ve also learned that peace comes from listening and understanding.

What is Conflict?

Conflict is a normal part of life. We are all different people with different experiences, visions, and ideas.

If handled properly and with respect, conflict can result in positive transformations.

Conflict Resolution: Remember to CARE

COMMUNICATE WITH EACH OTHER
Identify the conflict and the stakeholders involved.
Confirm that there is conflict, then define the source of the conflict.
Depersonalise the conflict by talking about a disagreement of ideas or behaviour.
Do not attack the person. Do not use abusive or insulting words. Use language like “this behaviour makes me feel disrespected” or “this idea is not effective”, then outline why.
Find ways to reduce tension where possible. We don’t think clearly when our heads are hot.
Take a break, if needed. Sometimes changing location will put things into perspective.
ACTIVELY LISTEN: EMPATHISE & ENGAGE
Look beyond the incident. Mutually agree that everyone involved is interested in finding a solution in order to move forward.
Be empathetic. Try to see things from the other person’s point of view.
Use active listening to better understand each other.
REVIEW OPTIONS
Talk over the options, looking for solutions that benefit everyone.
If neither person, nor group, is able to resolve the conflict between themselves, they can request the help of an objective third party.
END WITH SOLUTIONS OR BETTER UNDERSTANDING
Identify potential solutions.
Discuss these solutions respectfully.
Agree on the planned next steps.

What is Climate Change?

Climate Change is a long-term change in global temperatures and weather patterns, resulting in extreme heat and wildfires, excessive rainfall and flooding, and drought.
Since the 1800s, human activities have been the main cause of climate change, primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels (like coal, oil, and gas), which produces heat-trapping gases.

We are the first generation that can end poverty. We are also the last generation that can slow global warming before it is too late.

ENVIRONMENT & CLIMATE CHANGE
While South Sudan and the rest of Africa has contributed very little to the changing climate (only 2% of global emissions), it stands out as the most vulnerable region in the world.
The intensification of extreme weather events and climate change are major threats to the health and well-being of youth.
Everywhere in the world, climate change will continue to affect food security, reducing the availability of food and people’s access to it.
South Sudan is especially vulnerable to the impacts of climate change that affect agriculture. For example, flooding has caused major challenges for many people.
Solutions to global warming in Africa include effective land use, planning to avoid forest degradation, developing renewable energy, and limiting the expansion of coal-fired power plants.
Leadership, from all levels, is needed to face the challenges of climate change. We must act together to help reduce its impact on the environment and our health.
Young people are key actors in the fight against climate change.
1. Inform yourself about how to reduce your personal impact on the environment.
2. Speak out on social media about how climate change is affecting your communities.
3. Consider how you can advocate for change and international cooperation.

You have learned about different kinds of communities and societies, and the challenges that face them. Now comes the hard part! How will you help to address and solve the problems we are facing? How will you advocate for your beliefs and support your community? It’s up to you. You are the future.
