Your future is ahead of you. The life you lead in the future is influenced by the decisions you make today. As young people we need to realize the rights we have over our own bodies, our lives and our future. We have the power to transform ourselves and the world around us!
— Gwolo

My life is made up of many things
My school
My job
My family
My friends
My relationships with others
What are my ambitions for the future?
How can I accomplish these goals?
What rights do I have?
To an education?
To peace?
To be happy?
You have a right to feel respected, to be happy, and to live a full life. One of the most important relationships you will ever have is your relationship with yourself.

I want to learn how to help my parents on our farm. I see the impact of the changing climate. I want to study sciences, so I can learn more about irrigation. But, my parents only want to send my brother to school, even though he does not do as well. I want an education.
— Kojoki

I want to be a businessman … or an actor, I cannot decide! But, I don’t know how to accomplish either! I also want to have time to play football with my friends, to marry one day, to travel around the world, and to have a nice family.
— Tombe

I would like to be a professional singer … or maybe work with young people. I would also like to be a mother one day. I want to be respected. I want to see an end to Gender-Based Violence.
— Imanya

I have not yet decided what I would like to be, but I am good with my hands. I think I would like to work as a mechanic. I’ve got three children and want them to have a better childhood than I had.
— Ojwang

I want to be a doctor, even though my family thinks I should be a wife. I want the right to choose who and when and if I marry. I might want to marry one day, but only to a man who sees me as his partner. Until then, I am doing just fine on my own!
— Agiba

What do I want to do?

Make a list of my dreams and goals.
Write down my ideas about how I can achieve them.

What are Rights?

Rights are legal, social, or ethical principles of freedom.

Rights are the rules about what we are allowed to do, according to the legal system (legal rights), but can be used to talk about social rules as well.

What is Equity?

Equity is defined as “the quality of being fair or impartial or something that is fair and just.”

Gender, economic standing, our cultural background and ableness can impact rights.

What is Gender?

Gender is what we mean when talking about what makes a man, what makes a woman, and everything in between.

It can include biological sex, sex-based social structures, or gender identity.

Gender Equality vs. Gender Equity

GENDER EQUALITY, also known as sexual equality or equality of the sexes, means equal access to resources and opportunities regardless of a person’s gender.

GENDER EQUITY is the process of allocating resources and decision-making fairly to all genders without any discrimination on the basis of gender. It addresses any imbalances in the benefits available to people of different genders.

A father and his son go on a fishing trip, as they do every Sunday and have done every Sunday for over a year. They both enjoy the time they spend together. Last week after a day of fishing, they were walking home along the road, very happy with the fish they had caught.
A driver hits a large hole in the road and loses control of his car. He accidentally strikes both the father and son. The father is killed instantly, and the son is gravely injured. The driver puts both the son and the father into his car, and drives quickly to the hospital.
He rushes into the emergency area screaming for a doctor to help the son! “Please help! He’s been gravely injured in an accident! Please God! Someone Help!”
Recognizing the panic in the driver’s voice, the nurses rush to help, and bring the boy immediately to the operating arena.
The doctor arrives and gasps, “I cannot operate on this boy. He is my son!”

#1. How is this possible?

The doctor is the boy’s mother.

Many people will select the other choices because of something called bias.

We assume that certain professions, like midwifery and nursing, are just for women.

Doctors are often assumed to be men.

Education

Education is important, whether you are learning new skills through an apprenticeship or in school. It creates more choices for you in your future.

My name is Agiba. Since I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a doctor. I set goals for myself and worked hard to achieve them. My uncle chose to pursue his education and stressed to my father that girls too MUST get an education to improve our position and give us autonomy. I knew as a girl it was important for me to do VERY well in school. I chose to focus attention on my studies and rejected the attentions of boys. I had more important things to worry about. I am now doing well.

How do I achieve my goals?

1. Deeply desire my goal or resolution.
2. Visualize myself achieving the goal.
3. Make a plan for a path to follow.
4. Commit to the goal by writing it down.
5. Check my progress frequently.
6. Adjust my plan if progress slows.

What is Self-Esteem?

Self-esteem means feeling good about yourself.

People with
self-esteem

Feel liked and accepted
Are proud of what they do.
Believe in themselves.

People with
low self-esteem

Feel bad about themselves.
Are hard on themselves.
Think they are not good enough.

What if my self-esteem is low?

I can do things to feel better about myself and raise my self-esteem.

1. Be with people who treat me well.
2. Say positive things to myself.
3. Accept what’s not perfect.
4. Set goals and work toward them.
5. Focus on what goes well.
6. Give my time and help others to achieve their goals, no matter how small.
7. Learn to do things.
